In today’s draft profile we look at Patrick Jones II out of Pitt.

Teammate of Rashad Weaver, Jones had himself a solid year. It was his best statistical season at Pitt, but he basically one-upped his 2019 season total. He finished with 42 tackles, 12.5 for loss, 9 sacks, 3 passes defended and recovered a fumble. His play earned him a spot on the AP Second Team All-American.

Now he turns his attention to the NFL Draft. He heads to Mobile, Alabama to make his name known to NFL teams in attendance. What are my thoughts on him? Let me present my findings of him

Pros

Great burst off the line of scrimmage

Motor is unmatched. Constantly working and his bull rush will translate.

His best play comes against the run and against scrambling QBs

Cons

Through my film watching, I saw him get stuck on whoever was responsible for him. If he loses at the point of attack, he is basically a non-factor

Didn’t show effective use of the hands. Struggles to knock down the hands of an opponent.

This was a common occurrence for Jones throughout the Miami game. He could never get off his blocker and was pretty much a non-factor for a majority of this game.

Great bull rush here by Jones. He was able to win at the point of a attack and had the linemen on his heels.

Great job not to bite on the read-option. He also did a great job getting a hold of the QB and held to a small gain on the play.

Weaver(closet to the sideline) did a fantastic to shed the double team and make a nice tackle on the ball carrier.

Could The Giants Have Interest?

I’ll be honest, while I very much enjoyed watching his teammate Weaver, I didn’t enjoy watching Jones. He never really jumped out to me. I watched him struggle to get off offensive tackles, and while he made plays, I just found myself seeing Weaver as the better of the two. I view Weaver as the more effective pass rusher and better technique overall. I know my mock drafts have Jones going earlier, but I view that as a mistake. Maybe I’m sleeping on Jones, and I’ll be made to look silly, but I can’t see the Giants having much interest in him. He also isn’t a stand up rusher and usually operates out of a 4 point stance and has no experience in coverage. The Giants had a guy in Markus Golden who was somewhat similar and they really didn’t give him much run due to his lack of coverage abilities although he may have been the best pure pass rusher. I think he may be the rare case of “good player who doesn’t fit the scheme.
